The Orthodox Christian Community is synonymous with ‘Church worship and community prayer'. Wherever they went, they united together to pray. Let us look back to have a glimpse of the beginning, evolution and growth of St. Mary's Orthodox Church, Faridabad which completed 35 years of its existence. Let us introspect a time to celebrate and a moment to reflect.

“I love looking back to where we began seeing as we were at the beginning then slowly learning through the memories we have made together to bring us wherever we are….” “Sing to the Lord a new song for he has done marvelous things” (Psalm 98:1).

  25 th August, 1968 :

A special prayer meeting was arranged under the Presidentship of Shri T.I. John at 1-H/8, N.I.T. Faridabad, which housed St. John's School . The participants at the meting were Messers T.I. John, M.A. Rajukutty. P. Mathai, George Varghese, T.I. Oommen and V.M. Philip. It wad decided to name the Prayer Group “Orthodox Syrian Christian Congregation”. Subsequently decided to proceed to the Diocesan Metropolitan of the outside Kerala Diocese H.G. Mathews Mar Athanasius ‘ (later H.H. Baselius Marthoma Mathews-I) for getting a priest to fulfill the spiritual needs of the small community. The following founder members were unanimously elected as office bearers and committee members for the first time in the history of the Parish.

The meeting was attended by 22 members, including the members from our sister churches. Thereafter the members of Orthodox and those members from the sister churches assembled together regularly to pray and formed a blessed fellowship.

  19 th March, 1969 :

The Orthodox Syrian Christian congregation was christened as “St.Mary's Orthodox Church” in the prayer meeting held on 19 th March, 1969 . Regular prayer meetings were held in the houses of members on every Sunday.

  23 rd March, 1969 :

The Holy Qurbana was conducted for the first time at St. Joseph Church, NH-5, Faridabad by Revd. Fr. P.C. Geevargehse from Ambala on 23 rd March, 1969 . Revd. Fr. P.C. Geevarghese was succeeded by Revd. Fr. C.V. Samuel who was instrumental in the growth of the parish from 1969.

The Parish got opportunity to attend the services of a few visiting Priests. Monthly services were held at St. John's School till 1976. Services were occasionally held at Community Hall , NH -IV and at CNI Church as the parish had no building of its own for ten years.

  21 st January, 1976 :

“Orthodox Syrian Society” was formed to cater to the ever increasing member of Parishioners.

  August, 1977:

The mantle from Rev. Fr. C.V. Samuel was taken up by a young priest Rev. Fr. Zachariah Panackamattom who did the spade work to establish the Parish on a permanent footing. Area wise prayer meetings were regularly held. A plot of land in Sector-9, which was earmarked for religious purpose, was sorted out for the Church. From year 1977 onwards services were held twice in a month one in CNI Church and the other in St. Joseph Convent School , N.H.5.

  Allotment of Church Land :

Rev. Fr. P.K. Thomas took over the charge as the Vicar of the parish in December, 1978. During his tenure an initiative was mooted to procure a piece of land for the Church. The Government of Haryana was quick to respond to our application for allotment of land for the Church. A plot of land measuring 1.05 acre was allotted to the Orthodox Syrian Church Society on 18 th April, 1980 in appreciation of our sincere efforts and the direction of community service. The entire community shall remain grateful to Ch. Kursheed Ahmed, the then Haryana Minister for Country and Town Planning for his kind and considerate gesture.

  2nd November, 1980 , Laying the foundation Stone for the Church:

H.G. Thomas Mar Thimothius Metropolitan assisted by H.G. Dr. Paulose Mar Greegorios, the Diocese Metropolitan and H.G. Stephanos Mar Theodosius, the Metropolitan of Calcutta Diocese laid the foundation stone for the proposed church building.

  Regular Holy Qurbana at new Church :

The Church building was partially completed in 1983 and regular service was started since then by Rev. Fr. P.S. Yohannan.

  Church Consecration – March, 1996

The consecration of the church was conducted on Sunday the 24 th March, 1996 . H.G. Job Mar Philoxenos, the Asstt. Metropolitan of Delhi Diocese were the Chief Celebrants.

  Church Renovation:

The renovation of the church was started in July 2000 during the tenure of Fr. Shaji George. Slanting roof was added to the existing main church building. Church floor was laid with Kota stone and wooden doors and windows were fixed.

The front elevation, Kurissadi and Main Gate house were constructed during the tenure of Rev. Fr. P.K. Thomas who started the church construction in 1980. He was called upon by Almighty God to consummate the Church in his second term in 2003. The newly constructed front elevation of the Church and Kurissadi were consecrated by H.G. Job Mar Philexinos, assisted by H.G. Zachariahs Mar Nicholovas, Assistant Metropolitan American Diocese on 3 rd August, 2003 . A huge congregation from Delhi Diocese churches witnessed the grand finale of the consecration ceremony.
